Taking Care of A Cat
A lot of people think that caring for a cat is easy, and while it seems so on the outside given that they have reputation for being independent, in truth a cat needs a lot to keep them happy and healthy. First off, the breed is important. There are lots of different breeds of cats, long and short haired varieties, ones which have flat faces, that this is an essential part of not only picking the right cat companion, but looking after them as well.
If a cat has a flat face, for example, he or she could have some respiratory issues that may need to be addressed. In the event your cat has long hair, this can require additional grooming to keep it from getting all matted. No matter how long the hair, you'll want to brush your cat each week or two so that your living room furniture won't have a coat of cat hair of it's own! This may also keep your companion from having so many issues with hairballs.
Cats also need exercise, and although an outdoor cat has a lot of trees to climb on, cats that live indoors might not get the exercise they require, or climb on the furniture, jump up on the refrigerator, just to keep themselves amused. They will also use your house as a scratching post, tearing up your favorite couch or chair if you aren't careful. If you don't train your cat properly, and offer a substitute scratch post, they will enter into the habit of using your furniture and it'll be nearly impossible to break them from it.
You may want to get a "cat condo," which is a structure that serves as a jungle gym and scratching post for your cat. You can get them in all kinds of sizes and heights, but be certain that it has perches to sit and watch from and an enclosed area for your cat to hide in every once in awhile. The ideal materials for this use are tightly woven in order to stand up to your cat's claws. There are other basic needs for your new cat, food that is well-balanced, nutritious and has hairball reducing ingredients. A cat also requires a proper cat litter box. The type of cat litter you use really will depend on your personal preferences, a good choice is one that has clumping action, and also one that controls odor. There are litter boxes which have covers built in, are fully automatic, but again, this is something that is up to you. If you opt to go with one of those automatic ones, be sure you buy it early so your cats get accustomed to it.
In combination with proper grooming and basic needs, its also wise to take your cat to see a vet on a regular basis. Just like people, they require regular check ups, and have their shots. In order to prevent your pet from multiplying, it's adviseable to schedule to have them fixed as quickly as possible. Cats are not discriminate, so even if you have a brother and sister cat, a mom and a son, when the female goes into heat, the male will take advantage of this. What's more, you really do not want to be woke up in the middle of the night when your cat is howling for a mate. A male cat can also be very territorial, and spray around the house. Getting your male cat fixed can stop this from happening.
